Chapter Twenty-Four

‘Off to the disco again tonight, are you, love?’ Lynne asked pleasantly a week later as she loaded two fat lamb chops onto Rebecca’s plate at dinner.

Avoiding Legs’s eyes, Rebecca nodded. Lynne wouldn’t allow her to wander the streets, but if she thought she was going to the disco with other girls from the estate along well-lit roads, she would have no objection to her going out.

Rebecca once again reluctantly succumbed to Lynne’s attempts at making her pretty before escaping as quickly as she could. A few days ago she had crept into Legs’s bedroom, and after a scout around had managed to find one of the wraps he had bought off the drug dealer the week before, hidden in his sock drawer. It was in a safe place now, and one day soon she might use it against him – but not until the time was right and not until she’d given him another chance to have a change of heart. She still missed being part of a gang. When she had knocked about with the Lamp Hill gang she had felt a sense of power. With them she was no longer the spotty-faced kid that everyone made fun of, but someone to fear. Now she wanted to feel that thrill again, but Legs was standing in her way. She would ask him just once more to allow her to join his gang and if he still refused, he would have to be punished.

Speeding along the street, she saw him up ahead and making no effort to hide this time she yelled, ‘Legs – wait!’

She skidded breathlessly up to him. ‘Look, how about we start again?’ she began. ‘I really want to be part of your gang, OK? It could be great, you know.’

‘Fuck off!’ he said, looking her up and down with hostility. ‘Why, we wouldn’t let a skanky little kid like you in our gang for anythin’ – so like I said before, piss off, unless you want a good hidin’.’

Rebecca’s nostrils flared with anger. ‘You’ll be sorry for this,’ she said threateningly.

Legs threw back his head and laughed aloud. ‘Yeah, right. I’m fuckin’ terrified.’ With that he swaggered away, leaving Rebecca feeling utterly humiliated. Until the anger set in again, that was, and then her eyes glittered dangerously. ‘Right, me laddo, you asked for this,’ she muttered, and set off after him, once more keeping a safe distance.

This time he met his group on Coventry Road, and she followed them down the Griff Hollows. It was easy to stay out of sight as the lane was tree-lined. At the bottom of the Hollows a car was parked, no doubt by someone who had chosen to go fishing, and Legs and his followers descended on it like a plague of locusts.

‘Christ, we’ve hit the jackpot here,’ she heard Legs mutter gleefully. ‘It’s one o’ them new Mondeos. Kyle, get a brick or sommat. We’ll smash the window and hotwire it before the owner comes back.’

Rebecca turned and raced back the way she had come.
